The automatic, or self-winding, movement is a marvel of practical ingenuity. Here, the watchmaker’s art is laid bare: bridges and plates adorned with Côtes de Genève, perlage, and bevelled edges; screws with polished, heat-blued heads; wheels gilded to resist oxidation; and the balance wheel, the watch’s beating heart, oscillating with a hypnotic, steady cadence, often 28,800 times per hour.
